Intentionally Emily Hill's chosen subject bears a strong resemblance to the inherent changes in humanity: spring, summer, monsoon, winter and the invitation extended by these works is to see the beauty in each season is reflected by their names which indicate a hopeful bias e.g. Winter's Light, Indian Summer. These can equally be tied to the redemptive nature of the phrase 'turn over a new leaf.'
Each piece in Autumn Leaves draws inspiration from richly coloured fallen autumn leaves and small cuttings of living ones. These demonstrate how leaves are a visual barometer of seasons and are a pattern paralleled in our lives.Throughout this body of work Hill chooses a colour palette to illustrate these changes. She combines a use of rich textured backgrounds and contrasting cool and warm tones to allude to the diversity displayed in the life of a leaf. Oil is the significant medium used throughout Autumn Leaves but there is also some gold and silver guilding present. Hill invites the viewer to observe with her the complexity and simplicity of a leaf in its transformation both internally and externally.
